What is auto immune hepatitis?

My neighbour was recently diagnosed with some liver condition, and she mentioned 'autoimmune hepatitis'. What exactly is auto immune hepatitis, and how does it affect the body?

Autoimmune hepatitis is a severe condition where your body's own immune system starts attacking your liver cells. I had severe jaundice and liver swelling because of this, so please see a specialist immediately if you suspect it. Delaying treatment can lead to permanent scarring.

This is a chronic inflammatory liver disease of unknown etiology. Since it requires lifelong monitoring and often immunosuppressant therapy, please get a proper blood panel and liver biopsy done under a hepatologist's supervision.

While you must follow your medical prescription for autoimmune hepatitis, keeping your liver strain low with light, home-cooked vegetarian meals is very helpful. Avoid heavily processed foods and deep-fried items entirely.

Hey, don't stress too much! It is basically just your immune system getting a bit confused and fighting your liver by mistake. Modern medicines can manage it really well, so you will be absolutely fine.

I was devastated and cried for days when my doctor told me I had this. It is incredibly hard to accept that your own body is fighting itself, but please know that you are not alone and with daily medication, you can live a very normal life.

Listen to me, don't panic after reading scary articles on Google. Autoimmune hepatitis is manageable with correct, timely treatment. Just take your medicines regularly and get your liver function tests done on time.

My doctor just suggested we test for this because of my chronic fatigue and joint pain. Did anyone else have joint pain before their diagnosis? I am quite nervous about the results.
