What is a liver fluke?

I heard an old story about someone getting sick from a 'liver fluke' after eating something unhygienic. It sounded very scary. What exactly is a liver fluke, is it some kind of parasite that affects the liver?

It is a type of parasitic worm that infects the liver after you eat contaminated raw fish or water plants! This definitely makes me think twice about where I get my sushi and street food cravings sorted. Always eat from hygienic places, guys!

Yeh ek chota keeda hota hai jo gande paani ya kachhi machhli khane se pet ke raste liver me chala jata hai aur wahan bimar karta hai. Hamesha paani ubaal kar peeyein aur khana acche se paka kar hi khayein.

A parasitic flatworm living in the liver is the absolute last thing I wanted to read about while eating my midnight instant noodles. Note to self: cook your food properly and stop eating random street food at 2 AM unless you want worms in your liver!

I actually got infected with liver flukes last year after traveling and eating poorly cooked river fish. I had terrible fever and upper abdominal pain. A simple stool test and blood test confirmed it, and a short course of antiparasitic medicines prescribed by my doctor cleared it completely.

It is a parasitic worm belonging to the trematode family that infects the liver and bile ducts. I was reading about water safety and found out that eating raw watercress or contaminated aquatic plants is a big source of this infection. Really interesting but scary!

I didn't know parasites could live in the liver, this sounds quite scary. Does this liver fluke infection happen commonly in India, and what are the initial symptoms we should watch out for?
