What helps ear pain after tonsillectomy?

My younger brother recently had a tonsillectomy, and he's complaining a lot about ear pain. The doctor said it's normal, but it's really bothering him. What commonly helps with ear pain after a tonsillectomy?

My son had his tonsils out last year and the ear pain was the worst part for him! His doctor said it's referred pain from the throat. We gave him his prescribed pain meds religiously, and a cold pack on his neck/jaw helped too. Keep them hydrated with cold water or popsicles, it soothes the throat and can indirectly help.

After a tonsillectomy, eating is already a challenge, and then ear pain on top? That's just unfair! My cousin went through this, and she said super cold, soft foods like ice cream and chilled custard felt really good on her throat, which then somehow made the ear pain a little more bearable. Distraction from good food, maybe? 😄

Bro, that tonsillectomy pain is no joke, especially the ear part. I got mine done in school. Best thing is to just keep up with the pain meds the doctor gave you, don't miss a dose. And ice packs on the neck or side of the face helped me a bit. Just gotta ride it out man, it gets better.

Ear pain after surgery like tonsillectomy is somewhat common, but it's crucial to ensure it's not a complication. Please follow up with your surgeon or ENT doctor. They can confirm it's just referred pain and not an infection, and also adjust your pain management plan if needed. Don't hesitate to call them.

Post-tonsillectomy ear pain is often referred pain from the throat, as the same nerves (glossopharyngeal nerve) supply both areas. My ENT advised rotating prescribed pain medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Staying hydrated and chewing gum can sometimes help by exercising the jaw muscles, which might alleviate some pressure. Also, a humidified environment can soothe the throat, potentially reducing overall discomfort.
