What does sickle cell pain feel like?

My cousin's child has sickle cell disease, and she often talks about how painful the 'crises' are for him. It sounds really difficult, and I'm trying to understand what that kind of pain actually feels like for someone to experience it.

I was admitted just last month for a sickle cell crisis. It feels like a sharp, throbbing pressure deep inside your bones, almost like they are crushing from within. Painkillers at home don't work for this, you need hospital care and IV fluids to get relief.

In sickle cell, the pain is a very severe, sudden crisis in the bones and joints because of poor blood flow. While keeping well-hydrated with warm water and coconut water can help slightly, you must go to a hospital immediately when a pain crisis starts.

My nephew has sickle cell disease, and his pain is intense and unpredictable, usually hitting the chest, joints, or abdomen. Keeping a strict check on your lifestyle, avoiding extreme temperatures, and doing regular blood checkups with your hematologist are key to managing it.

From what our family specialist at Apollo explained, sickle cell pain is a vascular crisis where sickled cells block the micro-vessels. It is extremely excruciating. You should ask your treating doctor clearly about a personalized emergency plan for whenever these pain episodes hit.

It is honestly exhausting, both physically and emotionally. The pain feels like hot needles piercing your joints, and it makes you feel so helpless when nobody around understands how bad it hurts. Your pain is real, and please don't hesitate to seek immediate medical help during a crisis.

Do not try to treat sickle cell pain with any home remedies or WhatsApp advice. It is a serious genetic blood disorder where pain crises require proper medical intervention. Please go to a proper hematology department at a government or private hospital immediately.
