What does rem sleep look like?

My husband often talks in his sleep and sometimes moves his hands a lot. I heard that happens during a specific sleep stage called REM. How does REM sleep typically manifest in someone?

From what I have observed in my grandchildren, during REM sleep you can see their eyelids twitching and eyes moving rapidly underneath. Sometimes their fingers might twitch slightly, but otherwise, they are in a very deep, peaceful sleep. It is a completely natural thing, so do not worry.

It basically looks like someone is watching a high-speed tennis match behind closed eyelids while their body is acting like a lazy potato. If you see someone's eyes darting around while they are fast asleep, they are probably just dreaming about winning the lottery!

My husband told me my eyes twitch a lot and my breathing gets fast and uneven when I sleep. I got so worried that something was wrong, but then I read this is just what REM sleep looks like. Has anyone else's partner pointed this out to them?

When a person enters this state, their physical body is perfectly still and resting, but the eyes move gently beneath the lids as the soul experiences dreams. It is a beautiful process of mental healing. Stay positive and let your body rest naturally.

I am new to reading about sleep cycles, but does REM sleep look like the person is struggling or having a nightmare because of the fast eye movements? Or is the body completely calm and quiet during this time?
