What does milk thistle do for the liver?

My father has some liver issues, and a friend suggested milk thistle supplements. I'm a bit skeptical and want to understand the science. What does milk thistle do for the liver, if anything?

My gastroenterologist explained that silymarin, the active compound in milk thistle, acts as an antioxidant that helps reduce liver inflammation and supports cell regeneration. However, he clearly stated it should only be used as a supportive supplement and not as a replacement for standard medical therapy for liver conditions.

I recently recovered from grade 2 fatty liver, and my doctor prescribed a milk thistle supplement alongside a strict low-carb diet. It definitely helped lower my SGPT/SGOT levels within three months, but the lifestyle and diet changes were the real heroes.

In our family, we use turmeric and amla for liver health, but my cousin was advised to take milk thistle capsules by her physician for sluggish liver. It is known to protect liver cells from toxins, but we always consult our family doctor before starting any new herbal pill.

At my age, after years of eating street food, my liver needs all the help it can get! Milk thistle is basically like a gentle detox buddy that helps clear out toxins. Just don't think it is a license to drink alcohol and eat oily food every day!

Between work stress and endless cups of coffee, my body feels like a junkyard. I started taking milk thistle because it is supposed to help flush out toxins and keep the liver happy. Honestly, I don't know if it is working, but it makes me feel less guilty about my terrible sleep schedule.
