What does ligament pain feel like?

Since my gym injury last month, my knee has been giving me a lot of trouble. The physio said it might be a ligament issue, and I'm just wondering what that kind of pain actually feels like. Is it a sharp pain, or more like a dull ache?

It usually feels like a sharp, sudden snap or a deep, throbbing ache when you try to move the joint. I twisted my ankle last year and couldn't put any weight on it at all. Resting it, putting ice, and keeping it elevated really helped me recover.

When my daughter sprained her wrist during badminton, she described it as a sharp, shooting pain whenever she tried to twist her hand, along with some swelling. We gave her pain relief spray and made her wear a crepe bandage, which kept the joint stable.

I completely understand how stressful sudden joint pain can be, especially when you start worrying about permanent damage. Ligament pain is usually a sharp, intense ache right around the joint, often with swelling. Getting an X-ray done really helped calm my anxious thoughts.

My sports physiotherapist explained that ligament pain is different from muscle pain; it feels like a deep, tender ache directly over the joint and gets worse when you stretch or load the joint. He advised against massaging it directly, as that can sometimes worsen the inflammation.

Ligament pain is typically characterized by a sharp, stabbing sensation at the moment of injury, followed by a dull, persistent ache and joint instability. While resting and applying ice is a good initial step, getting an orthopedist's opinion is the best way to rule out a severe tear.

It feels like a sharp, localized pain and you might hear a 'pop' sound if the ligament actually tears. When I visited the orthopedics department at Max Hospital, they advised me to get an MRI to see the exact grade of the sprain, so I suggest you consult your doctor clearly about it.
