What does labor pain feel like?

I'm expecting my first baby soon and everyone keeps telling me about labor pain. I'm a bit scared, to be honest. What does labor pain actually feel like, so I can prepare myself?

I totally get it, the fear of labor pain can be so overwhelming when your due date is near. For me, it started like very intense period cramps that slowly wrapped around my lower back and came in very tight, regular waves. You are much stronger than you think, and your body will handle it beautifully.

It is completely normal to feel terrified about this, I lost so much sleep worrying about the pain during my third trimester. It feels like a massive tightening of your whole abdomen and a heavy, crushing ache in your lower back. Once it starts, your hospital team will help guide you through every single contraction.

It is a very strong, tightening sensation that builds up to a peak and then fades away completely. Don't worry, take deep breaths when it happens, and keep your husband or family close for support.

It feels like an extreme, involuntary muscle contraction that tightens your entire core and lower back. Having good core strength and doing pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy really helped me manage the physical intensity and push efficiently when the time came.

My obstetrician explained that labor pain is the uterus contracting to open the cervix, which feels like severe cramping accompanied by intense pelvic pressure. She advised focusing on slow, rhythmic breathing and reminded me that options like epidurals are always available if the pain becomes too difficult to manage.

It is a heavy, painful squeezing in your back and stomach that grows stronger over hours. To stay stress-free, make sure you have your hospital bag ready and look into the delivery package costs at your hospital beforehand, so you don't have to worry about bills while in pain.
