What does a rheumatoid arthritis flare-up feel like?

My grandmother has had RA for a long time, and sometimes she says her pain is much worse. We call it a 'flare-up'. Can anyone describe what a rheumatoid arthritis flare-up feels like, so I can better understand her experience?

A rheumatoid arthritis flare-up is intense. It's not just pain; it's significant swelling, tenderness, and stiffness in multiple joints, often symmetrical. You'll also experience extreme fatigue, sometimes a low fever, and general malaise. I had a severe flare once that caused complications. If you suspect you're having one, please see your rheumatologist immediately. Early intervention is crucial to prevent joint damage.

At a good hospital, the rheumatologist will clearly explain what a flare-up is. It's a period of increased disease activity, meaning more severe joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, often worse in the mornings. You also feel immense fatigue. If you're experiencing this, call your doctor right away; they'll guide you on adjusting medication or other steps. Don't try to guess or manage it alone.

Oh god, an RA flare-up sounds absolutely terrifying. I get anxious just thinking about it. From what I've read, it's not just regular joint pain, but excruciating pain, swelling, and stiffness that feels like your body is seizing up. Plus that extreme fatigue, right? If you're feeling anything close to that, please, please consult your doctor immediately. It's better to be safe than sorry.

When the body is in an RA flare, it feels like a deep imbalance. There is intense pain and stiffness in the joints, particularly in the morning, making movement very difficult. A profound fatigue also sets in, affecting mental clarity. Gentle breathwork and meditation can offer some calm during these times, but for the physical symptoms, it is essential to seek guidance from your medical doctor. Listen to your body and act with kindness towards yourself.
