What do people with asthma use to breathe?

My neighbour's kid has severe asthma and sometimes I see her using something, like a device. I was curious, what do people with asthma usually use to help them breathe when they have an attack or difficulty?

In my own experience of dealing with asthma since childhood, I rely entirely on my prescribed daily controller inhaler to keep my lungs open. During sudden dusty travels, I always keep my rescue inhaler in my pocket. I don't know the medical terms, but this routine is what keeps me breathing fine.

I totally get it, struggling to breathe can be incredibly terrifying. Most people use metered-dose inhalers, often with a plastic chamber called a spacer, to help pump the medicine deep into the lungs. Knowing you have that little device near you brings so much peace of mind.

To breathe easily, most use basic inhalers which are quite affordable in India, costing around 200 to 500 rupees depending on the brand. For home care, buying a basic nebulizer machine (costs around 1200-1500) can save you money on emergency clinic visits during bad weather changes.

While inhalers are the main medical tools used to breathe easily during asthma, eating a clean diet can also help reduce inflammation. I avoid cold foods, curd, and heavy fried items at night as they seem to trigger my congestion. Focus on fresh, warm vegetarian meals alongside your regular treatment.

Along with standard doctor-prescribed inhalers, doing lung-strengthening exercises really helps. Many people with asthma practice pranayama and deep-breathing routines, which help control breathing patterns during workouts. Just make sure your doctor clears your fitness routine first.
