What do japanese people sleep on?

I saw a documentary about Japanese culture, and their sleeping arrangements looked so different. They often sleep on the floor. What do Japanese people typically sleep on? Is it a special kind of mattress?

I was looking this up online because of my back pain, and they sleep on traditional mattresses called 'futons' which are laid out on 'tatami' straw mats on the floor. It looks super minimalistic and clean.

Beta, they sleep on a thin, soft mattress on the floor, very similar to how we sleep on a simple gadda or cotton mattress on the ground in our villages. It is very good for keeping the back straight.

They use thin floor mattresses called futons. I tried sleeping on a hard floor like that to cure my chronic back pain without seeing a doctor, which only made it much worse. Please don't self-treat severe back pain with floor sleeping; get an orthopedic checkup first.

Yes, they use folding cotton mattresses called futons on the floor. It is actually very comfortable once you get used to the firmness.

They sleep on thin futon mattresses on tatami mats. My son had posture issues, and switching him to a firmer, low-profile bed really helped his back. It's practical because you can just fold the mattress and put it away during the day, leaving more space for kids to play.
