What causes vomiting and diarrhea at the same time?

My wife and I both woke up with severe vomiting and diarrhea at the same time last night. We ate the same dinner, so we suspect food poisoning. What causes vomiting and diarrhea at the same time like this?

I literally went through this nightmare last week after eating some stale chicken. It started with stomach cramps, then vomiting and diarrhea together. The doctor put me on antibiotics and hydration fluids, which was the only thing that worked.

Vomiting and diarrhea together is a classic sign of gastroenteritis or severe food poisoning, which can quickly lead to dangerous dehydration. Stop searching for quick home cures on the internet. Go to a nearby clinic and let a doctor examine you properly.

When you have both vomiting and loose motions, your body loses all its strength. I always give my family light ORS water or barley water to sip slowly so the stomach doesn't reject it. But if the purging is continuous, please don't wait at home, go see a doctor immediately.

This usually happens due to contaminated water or food infected with bacteria. As a vegetarian, I am extremely particular about washing raw vegetables and avoiding outside salads, especially in rainy seasons. Please drink only boiled water and consult a doctor right away.

I was reading about stomach infections, and it seems viral gastroenteritis or 'stomach flu' is the most common cause for both symptoms starting at once. It sounds incredibly exhausting to deal with. Hope anyone going through this gets well soon and sees a doc.
