What causes sternum pain?

For a few days now, I've been feeling a dull ache in my sternum, especially when I breathe deeply or stretch. My mother asked me to check online what causes sternum pain, so I'm doing that now.

Sternal pain is often caused by muscle strain from working out, costochondritis, or even acid reflux from sitting too long after meals. If you don't have time to wait, get a quick virtual doctor consultation to rule out any cardial issues. It's the most practical first step.

I am feeling a dull ache in my breastbone when I stretch my arms or sneeze. Has anyone else felt this exact same pain? I am a bit worried and wanted to know if it goes away on its own.

I completely understand how terrifying it is to feel any pain in your chest area, your mind instantly goes to the worst thoughts. Please breathe, it is very often just muscle inflammation or gastric pressure. Just to be absolutely sure and calm your mind, please see a doctor.

I tried everything from hot water bags to herbal teas when I had this pain. Some warm compresses helped, but my doctor ultimately found it was joint inflammation from poor posture. Simple posture correction did the trick, so do get it checked.

A simple steam or warm compress can ease chest wall muscle tightness if you have a cold. However, because pain in the sternum is near the heart, you must not delay seeing a doctor if you feel any pressure, sweating, or breathing difficulty.

My grandmother used to say chest bone pain is due to 'body heat' and suggested tender coconut water. While it is very cooling, my doctor explained it was actually costochondritis. I highly recommend getting a professional medical opinion to be safe.

Sometimes severe acidity from eating spicy or heavy oily food can mimic pain right behind the breastbone. Trying a light diet with lots of curd and avoiding late dinners might help if it's acid reflux. But do check with a doctor to confirm.
