What causes sleep paralysis demon?

My friend told me about something called 'sleep paralysis demon' where people see scary things when they can't move. Is this a real medical thing, or just a horror story? I've had sleep paralysis sometimes and it makes me wonder.

I was really scared to read about this because I didn't know waking hallucinations could feel so real. Is there any simple exercise or a specific sleeping position that can prevent this from happening?

Don't worry, that 'demon' is just your brain's clumsy way of explaining why you can't move when you wake up in the middle of a dream. It is just a harmless hallucination, not an actual ghost waiting to grab you!

My teenage daughter experienced this scary hallucination during her high-stress exams. We realized it was due to severe sleep deprivation and sleeping on her back. We helped her set a proper sleep routine, and it hasn't happened since.

Before you spend money on expensive psychologists or diagnostic sleep studies, try improving your sleep habits for free. Just maintain a strict sleep schedule and avoid screens. If it still keeps happening, then you can budget for a neurologist visit.

This scary experience is just caused by a temporary overlap of dreaming and waking states when you are extremely tired. Please rest well and try not to worry, you are perfectly safe.
