What causes severe diarrhea and vomiting?

My younger brother suddenly had a severe bout of diarrhea and vomiting last night, and we were quite worried. It came on very quickly. What usually causes such severe diarrhea and vomiting?

Listen, please don't panic first of all. Severe diarrhea and vomiting usually happen due to a bad stomach infection or food poisoning, but it drains your body really fast. Keep sipping ORS or warm water with salt and sugar, and if it doesn't stop by evening, you must go to a clinic immediately.

When I had this last year, the doctor got a basic stool test and blood panel done which cost around 800 rupees in my local lab. It's better to consult a general physician first so they tell you exactly which test is needed, otherwise you will end up wasting money on unnecessary packages.

Your body is losing all its fluids and stamina right now, so please avoid any heavy physical activity or workouts. Once your doctor says you are stable and dehydration is sorted, you can slowly start with basic light walking inside the house to get some energy back.

Yaar, this actually happened to me after eating some tapri food last month, it was horrible. It's usually gastroenteritis or some nasty bug, so don't eat anything heavy at all. Stick to plain dahi-chawal and get a doctor to check you out soon.

Has anyone else felt completely dizzy and weak with this? I start shivering whenever my stomach gets this bad and it scares me so much. Please let me know if this is a normal reaction or if I should run to the emergency room.

Oh god, this is the absolute worst feeling, but don't stress too much, you will be fine. Just focus on resting and staying hydrated for now. Let the doctor give you a quick medication course to stop the vomiting first.

I totally get it, it is incredibly exhausting and leaves you feeling completely drained of all energy. Please take it very easy and don't force yourself to eat heavy meals. I hope you feel much better very soon, please see a doctor today.

Don't experiment with heavy home remedies right now. Just get some ORS packets from the chemist, dissolve them in clean boiled water, and keep drinking it throughout the day. It is the cheapest and most effective way to keep your strength up until you see the doctor.
