What causes severe dandruff?

No matter what shampoo I use, my dandruff is always really bad and itchy. It's getting embarrassing. What causes such severe dandruff that nothing seems to help?

Please don't trust random internet tips like applying lemon or baking soda, as they can severely irritate your scalp. Severe dandruff is often a fungal overgrowth or seborrheic dermatitis. Verify this with a qualified dermatologist for a proper medicated shampoo.

I was losing so much hair and had huge white flakes, I panicked thinking I was going bald. But it was just a seasonal yeast flare-up on my scalp. A dermatologist gave me a simple lotion and it cleared up completely in two weeks, so relax.

I dealt with severe flaky dandruff for years. The only thing that worked was using a Ketoconazole shampoo twice a week, leaving it on the scalp for 5 minutes before washing. Also, stop oiling your hair when you have active dandruff, it feeds the fungus.

Totally agree about avoiding heavy hair oils. Swapping my regular shampoo with an anti-dandruff zinc pyrithione shampoo really helped reduce my scalp itching.

I totally get it, the constant itching and seeing white flakes on your dark shirts can be so embarrassing and frustrating. It is very common and definitely treatable. Just visit a skin clinic and they will sort it out easily.

I noticed my scalp gets super oily and flaky whenever I indulge in too many sweets and cheese bursts! High sugar diets definitely trigger my skin issues. Maybe cut down on the desserts for a week and see if it helps your scalp.
