What causes rib pain?

I've been experiencing a sharp pain around my ribs sometimes, especially when I take a deep breath or twist my body. It's not constant but comes and goes, and I'm a bit worried. Could it be a serious issue, or just a muscle strain?

Actually, it can be due to a heavy gym workout or sometimes even a bad cough, yaar. I had this last month after a bad bout of cold and got so scared. But it was just a muscle strain near the ribs, doctor gave some gel.

My teenager had this last year after sports practice, we thought it was something major. Turns out it was costochondritis, which is just inflammation of the cartilage. Rest and a warm heating pad did the trick, but please do consult a pediatrician or general doctor.

Haan, sometimes sleeping in a weird position also causes this. But don't ignore it na if it hurts when you take deep breaths. Better to get it checked by a doc just to be on the safer side.

If you don't have any breathlessness and it's just a mild catch from lifting something heavy, try applying some basic pain relief ointment and take rest. Avoid bending down or picking up buckets for a few days. If the pain is very sharp, go to the clinic.

Please go to a hospital and get a proper checkup immediately. I once ignored a dull rib ache thinking it was gas, but it turned out to be a pleurisy issue that got worse. Don't do self-diagnosis for rib area pain at all.
