What causes growth on thyroid?

My mother recently found a small lump on her neck and the doctor said it's a growth on her thyroid. She's very worried, and we're trying to understand more. What generally causes these kinds of growths on the thyroid gland?

Ah, thyroid nodules! Sometimes our thyroid gland just gets bored and decides to grow a tiny extra pocket. Most of the time these growths are completely harmless, like a harmless little mole inside, so don't start writing your will just yet!

Welcome to middle age, where your body starts growing things in places you didn't even know existed! These thyroid nodules are very common, often just due to iodine issues or genetics. Just get an ultrasound done so you can stop worrying.

My mother's report mentions a small cyst on her thyroid gland. We are very scared to ask the doctor. Does a growth always mean we need a surgery, or can it be managed with daily medicines?

Please do not take any thyroid swelling lightly. My small nodule turned out to be growing fast and eventually compressed my windpipe, needing urgent removal. Go to a good endocrinologist and get a proper FNAC test done to know exactly what it is.

I noticed a small lump in my neck years ago and ignored it thinking it was just fat or gas. By the time I went to the doctor, it had grown quite large and the treatment became much more complicated. Go get an ultrasound scan immediately, early detection saves so much trouble.
