What causes dandruff in kids?

My son, he's 8 years old, has started getting dandruff. His hair looks a bit oily, but then there are flakes too. Is it common in kids, and what usually causes dandruff in children?

In kids, it is usually because we don't wash their hair properly after they play outside in the dust and sweat. Just wash their head with a very mild baby shampoo and don't apply heavy oils on their scalp.

Between my own joint pains and managing my kid's school, now I have to deal with their dandruff too! It is usually just dry scalp or not rinsing out the shampoo fully during their quick baths.

Sometimes a lack of healthy fats and vitamins in a child's diet can show up as dry, flaky scalp. Try incorporating a few soaked almonds and walnuts in their breakfast, and ensure they are drinking enough water daily.

I know how tricky skin and scalp issues can be, even for little ones. While it is usually just cradle cap or mild dry skin, it is best to consult a pediatrician before using any strong medicated anti-dandruff shampoos on kids.

Before you spend a lot of money on expensive dermatological products or private clinic visits, just try a basic mild baby shampoo twice a week. If the scaling is thick, a simple consultation with your regular family pediatrician is enough.
