What causes bad period pain?

Every month, my period pain is so severe that I can't even get out of bed sometimes. My mother says it's normal, but it feels more than that. What causes such bad period pain?

While mild cramping is normal due to prostaglandins causing the uterus to contract, severe pain can sometimes be a sign of conditions like endometriosis or fibroids. It is always best to consult a gynaecologist for a proper scan and clinical diagnosis rather than assuming it is just regular pain.

Look, bearable pain is one thing, but if you are crying in bed and cannot do your daily work, it is not normal. Go to a good gynaecologist instead of suffering silently. There is no prize for bearing pain, get checked up.

I used to suffer so much every month and tried every remedy under the sun. A warm hot water bag on the tummy and drinking ginger-cinnamon tea really helps to soothe the muscles. But if the pain is unbearable, please don't just rely on home remedies and consult a doctor.

I am not a medical expert so I won't give advice, but in my own experience, my severe period pain was linked to a small ovarian cyst. Once my doctor identified it and treated it, the pain became much more manageable.

I completely understand what you are going through, the first two days are literally the worst. Sometimes poor sleep and eating too much junk food right before periods makes the inflammation worse. Try eating light, warm food and keep yourself cozy.

If your doctor says it is safe and there are no underlying issues, try doing light walking or gentle stretches during your period. It really helps release endorphins which act as natural pain relievers. It has personally helped me reduce my cramps significantly.

I totally get it, that terrible dragging ache makes you want to just curl up and cry. It is physically and mentally exhausting. Please take some rest, use a heating pad, and don't hesitate to visit a doctor if it feels too much to handle.

Don't listen to random people online telling you to drink weird herbal juices or take magic pills to cure period pain. Severe pain needs a proper medical evaluation by a licensed gynaecologist. Get checked scientifically.

For me, severe period pain and irregular cycles were actually tied to my thyroid levels. When your thyroid is off, it messes up your entire cycle. I highly suggest getting a thyroid profile and hormone tests done alongside your gynaecologist visit.

Please do not make the mistake I made by ignoring severe pain for years thinking it is just a 'girl thing'. It turned out to be severe endometriosis which caused complications later in my life. Get a pelvic ultrasound done now and save yourself the trouble.
