What causes acute kidney injury?

I heard about a friend's relative who suddenly had 'acute kidney injury' and ended up in the hospital. I didn't know kidneys could fail so quickly. What causes acute kidney injury?

I literally spend hours worrying about this whenever I take a simple painkiller. Acute kidney injury is usually caused by sudden dehydration, severe infections, or medication toxicity. It is so scary because it happens so fast, please get a creatinine test done if you are worried just to be safe!

My father developed acute kidney injury last year during a severe bout of dengue because of extreme fluid loss. The doctors managed it with IV fluids in the hospital, and his kidney function returned to normal in two weeks. I can't give medical advice, but keeping fluids up during high fever is very important.

Look, acute kidney issues often happen because of simple dehydration during summers or taking heavy pain balms and pills without asking. A simple solution is to drink 3 liters of water daily and stop buying random medicines over the counter. If you have swelling or low urine output, go to a clinic immediately.

This injury to the kidneys usually happens when there is a sudden lack of blood flow or water in the body, or from strong medicines. Do not worry too much, just consult a good doctor and they will help you recover soon.

For general kidney health, drinking barley water (jo ka paani) is very good to flush out mild toxins. But for an acute injury, which is a sudden and serious medical issue, home remedies will not work. Please go to a hospital immediately for proper treatment.

It is mainly caused by sudden blood flow reduction to the kidneys, infections, or drug toxicity. Definitely see a doctor immediately.
