What causes a optical migraine?

Sometimes I get these weird visual disturbances, like zigzag lines or blind spots, before a headache starts. My sister calls it an 'optical migraine'. What typically causes an optical migraine to happen?

For me, hormonal fluctuations and thyroid issues tend to trigger these strange visual migraines. It is really important to get regular blood tests to check your hormone levels. Definitely follow up with a doctor to find the exact root cause.

I completely understand how isolating and scary it feels when your vision suddenly goes weird. People think it's just a simple headache, but the emotional stress of not being able to see properly for 20 minutes is awful. Please be gentle with yourself, you are not alone in this.

I suddenly saw flickering blind spots while working on my laptop last week and it terrified me! Does anyone else also get these scary visual patterns without any actual headache? I am still so worried it will happen again.

I have dealt with these optical migraines for over twenty years now, beta. Usually, bright lights, dehydration, or too much screen time triggers them. Just sit in a dark room, close your eyes, drink some water, and they will pass on their own in half an hour.

Excuse me, I am very new to this term. Does an optical migraine always mean you will get a severe headache after the vision changes, or can it just happen silently? I would appreciate it if someone could explain this to me.
