What can cause chest pain and shortness of breath?

My friend recently had an episode where he felt chest pain and was also short of breath, which was very scary for everyone. We're trying to understand what might cause such symptoms together. What conditions can lead to both chest pain and shortness of breath?

Oh god, please don't sit and Google this because it will only make you panic more, which makes breathing even harder. Sometimes severe acidity or panic attacks feel exactly like this, but we can't take chances. Please go to the nearest clinic right now and get an ECG done just to be safe!

Usually, for mild chest heaviness due to gas, I take warm water with ajwain and hing. However, since you are also experiencing shortness of breath, this could be a serious lung or heart issue. Please do not try any home remedies for this and consult a doctor immediately.

At my age, even walking up two flights of stairs with heavy grocery bags makes my chest tight. But jokes apart, chest tightness and gasping for air is not something you ignore over a cup of chai. Get your blood pressure and heart checked by a cardiologist immediately, friend.

My son had similar symptoms last winter and it turned out to be cough-variant asthma triggered by pollution. It was so scary to watch him struggle for breath. Please get a doctor to listen to your chest, as it could be bronchitis, asthma, or something requiring urgent medical attention.

I had these exact symptoms last month and thought I was having a massive heart attack. It turned out to be severe pleural effusion from a lung infection I didn't know I had. Please go straight to the ER, don't wait to see if it passes on its own.
