What are the side effects of radiation for prostate cancer?

My father-in-law recently had radiation therapy for prostate cancer. He's been feeling quite weak afterwards. I want to know what are the common side effects of radiation treatment for prostate cancer so we can understand what he's going through.

According to our urologist, the radiation targets the prostate but inevitably irritates the surrounding tissues. This leads to urinary frequency, urgency, and sometimes rectal bleeding or diarrhea, known as radiation proctitis. These side effects usually peak near the end of the therapy cycle.

I was researching this for a family friend, and it seems like urinary irritation is the most common issue. Patients feel a constant burning during urination and might have to rush to the bathroom frequently, especially at night. It sounds uncomfortable but apparently, it resolves gradually.

If you are getting treated at a reputed hospital, they usually give you a detailed list of potential side effects, including bowel changes and skin redness. Make sure you ask your oncologist clearly about bladder spasms and what medicines they can prescribe to manage them.

The fatigue from radiation can make you want to stay in bed all day, but doing short, slow 15-minute walks can actually help fight that lethargy. Just make sure your doctor clears it first, and don't do anything that strains your lower pelvic area.

When my father was undergoing prostate radiation, we tracked his daily hydration and toilet trips using an app to make sure he wasn't losing too much fluid. The fatigue is real, so keeping an eye on sleep and daily activity levels helps balance rest and recovery.

Haan na, prostate radiation se pee karne me bohot jalan hoti hai aur baar-baar jana padta hai. My relative was feeling very tired all the time too. It requires a lot of patience, ho na? Take care of him.

My father underwent this treatment in Chennai. My grandmother suggested giving him barley water to cool his urinary system, which we did alongside the doctor's prescribed medications. Always trust your doctor's advice on managing the bladder burning and fatigue.
