My dad went through prostate radiation last year. The biggest side effects for him were extreme fatigue and having to run to the toilet every hour because of bladder irritation. It takes a few months after the session ends for these urinary symptoms to calm down.

I totally get it, supporting a family member through cancer therapy is physically and emotionally exhausting. Along with urinary urgency, they might experience rectal irritation or mild diarrhea due to the radiation proximity. Please make sure they get plenty of rest.

Besides the physical tiredness and burning while urinating, keep in mind that the weekly hospital trips and supportive medicines cost a lot. Plan your budget ahead for things like skin-soothing creams and protective undergarments to avoid sudden financial stress.

It is so hard to watch someone go through the fatigue and embarrassing bowel changes that radiation brings. The emotional impact and loss of privacy during daily hospital visits can make them very irritable. Just being there for them silently is the best support.

Beta, the heat of radiation can dry out the body and cause weak digestion. We used to give my cousin very light buttermilk and boiled rice to cool the stomach. Avoid any spicy foods during these weeks to protect the bladder from extra irritation.
