What are the five stages of kidney disease?

My mother-in-law has some kidney issues, and the doctor mentioned something about stages. I'm trying to educate myself to help her better. What are the different stages of kidney disease?

I was diagnosed with Stage 2 kidney disease last year during a routine health checkup. The stages are based on your eGFR score, where Stage 1 is normal function and Stage 5 is kidney failure. Catching it in Stage 2 allowed me to make lifestyle changes and stabilize my kidney health.

In the early stages (1 to 3), light daily walking and staying active can help manage blood pressure, which protects your kidneys. However, as you reach Stage 4 or 5, you must limit intense physical exertion. Always consult your nephrologist before planning any exercise routine.

This is very correct. Stage 4 and 5 are advanced stages where you need to be extremely careful about potassium and fluid intake.

Diet plays a huge role in managing the five stages of kidney disease. In Stages 1-3, reducing salt and processed foods is key, while in Stages 4-5, you must strictly limit high-potassium foods like bananas and potatoes. Always follow a renal dietitian's customized chart.

I totally get it, hearing that kidney disease has stages can make anyone feel very scared and anxious. But please know that many people live fully active lives for years at Stage 2 or 3 with proper care. Sending you lots of strength and positive thoughts.

To keep it practical: the five stages represent declining eGFR. If you are busy, just schedule a bi-annual renal profile test online to track your creatinine levels. Don't wait for visible symptoms like swollen feet, which usually only appear by Stage 4.
