What are piles in construction?

I overheard my colleagues talking about 'piles' on a construction site, and it sounded like some kind of foundation work. What exactly are these 'piles' they are referring to in construction?

Haha, don't worry, this isn't a medical condition! In construction, piles are deep foundation columns driven into the ground to support heavy buildings on weak soil. They act like strong pillars underground to keep the structure stable.

I got so confused when I saw this term in my housing contract and immediately thought of the medical issue. Did anyone else get a bit startled by this homonym or is it just my anxious brain?

This is totally related to civil engineering, not health. They are heavy support columns made of concrete or steel used for building foundations. It has absolutely nothing to do with diet or digestion.

This is a purely structural engineering term referring to deep foundation elements. If you are experiencing any physical symptoms related to medical piles, please ignore construction forums and consult a general surgeon at a good hospital.

I totally understand why search results can look alarming if you just search the word 'piles'. Rest assured, in civil work, it's just a standard foundation technique using deep pillars. Nothing to worry about regarding your health.

At my age, when I hear 'piles', my lower back starts aching automatically! But thankfully, in construction, these are just heavy concrete pillars driven into the soil to hold up massive buildings. No ointments needed for these!

I was sleep-deprived and reading my home construction blueprint and got a mini heart-attack seeing this word. Turns out they just mean underground concrete pillars to support my heavy roof, thank god!

As a builder, I can tell you these are concrete or steel columns driven deep into earth when the topsoil is too soft. If you are constructing a house on clayey soil, make sure your engineer designs proper pile foundations to prevent future cracks.

Haan, yeh civil engineering waali piles hain na, jise hum foundation pillars bolte hain. Ye mitti ke andar tak jaati hain badi building ko support dene ke liye. Medical waale se iska koi lena dena nahi hai.

These are load-bearing concrete pillars for high-rise buildings. Since it is a non-medical query, I will just remind everyone to take a walk and keep their blood pressure in check while reading online!
