Should newborn wear hat to sleep?

My newborn always feels a bit cold, especially at night. My mother-in-law insists I should make him wear a hat to sleep. Is it actually safe or even necessary for a newborn to wear a hat to sleep?

For newborns, in the first few hours or days, if the room is cool, a soft cap might be okay to keep them warm, but not for sleeping through the night. Overheating is not good. Always follow what the pediatrician says for these things, don't rely only on old traditions.

It's generally not recommended for newborns to wear hats to sleep. It can lead to overheating.

Dekho, as a general rule, no. Unless it's super cold and your doc specifically says so for a very tiny baby right after birth, avoid hats during sleep. Babies regulate their temperature through their heads, and a hat can make them overheat. Keep it simple and safe for the little one.

When my baby was born last year, the nurses and pediatrician were very clear: no hats for sleep once they're stable and out of the initial few hours. They said babies can overheat easily and it's also a SIDS risk. We just made sure the room temperature was comfortable.
