Should mental health days be excused absences?

Sometimes I just feel completely overwhelmed and can't focus on work, but I feel guilty taking a day off. Should mental health days be considered like any other sick leave and be excused absences without question?

Absolutely, yes! I've had days where my anxiety was so bad, I couldn't function, but I felt guilty taking leave. Mental health is just as important as physical health. If you have a fever, you stay home. If your mind needs a break, why should it be any different? We need to normalize this.

I feel it's very important to acknowledge mental well-being. If someone is truly struggling, a day off can prevent burnout and bigger issues. It should be treated with the same respect as a physical illness leave. However, clear guidelines would be needed to ensure it's not misused and that people get the right support.

While I agree in principle, the implementation needs thought. What exactly constitutes a 'mental health day'? For serious mental health issues, seeing a professional is crucial. Just taking a day off might not be enough and could delay proper treatment. We need policies that encourage both rest and professional help when needed.

Practically speaking, if someone is really not able to work due to mental stress, then yes, it should be an excused absence. It's better for productivity in the long run. Maybe a few days per year earmarked for it, without needing detailed explanations, would be a good start for companies. It reduces stigma too.
