Is white noise bad for sleep?

My husband uses a white noise machine to help our baby sleep. I've heard some people say it might actually be bad for their developing ears or brain in the long run. Is white noise bad for sleep, especially for infants?

I was actually reading up on this recently because my roommate uses a fan sound to sleep. Some studies say if it is too loud, it might affect your hearing over time, but generally, at a low volume, it seems perfectly fine. I guess moderation is the key here.

In our times, we just slept under a heavy, noisy ceiling fan and that was our white noise! It never did us any harm. Don't worry too much about these modern terms, a quiet environment or a gentle steady hum is perfectly natural.

I have been using a white noise machine for my toddler and myself for two years now. Honestly, it has only improved our sleep quality because it blocks out the loud street traffic. We have had no issues so far.

I completely understand being anxious about how these things affect your brain, I used to worry about the exact same thing. Personally, playing a soft rain sound helped me calm my racing thoughts at night. Just keep the phone a bit far from your bed and at a low volume to feel safe.

No need to buy fancy white noise machines or premium apps for this. If you have trouble sleeping, just put your pedestal fan on medium speed or use a free YouTube video. Keep the volume low and it will do the job perfectly without costing anything.
