Is watermelon and cantaloupe good for diabetics?

My brother was just diagnosed with diabetes and he's confused about what fruits he can eat. Watermelon and cantaloupe are his favorites. Can he have them, or are they too sweet for someone with diabetes?

Both these melons have a fairly high glycemic index, though cantaloupe is slightly lower than watermelon. If you track your macros on an app, you'll see they add up in carbs quickly. If you want to have them, measure a small portion of 100g and pair it with some pumpkin seeds to manage the glycemic load.

In our family, we always say seasonal fruits are good, but melons must be eaten with care if you have sugar. Do not eat them late in the evening or as a dessert after meals. Always consult your doctor to know what is safe for your health.

Melons generally contain high amounts of natural sugars that can lead to rapid blood glucose spikes. While they do offer hydration and vitamins, they are not the most suitable fruits for diabetics. I recommend consulting your consulting physician or a certified dietitian to tailor your fruit intake safely.

When you have metabolic issues like thyroid or diabetes, even natural sugars in melons can upset your system. It is best to get your blood tests done regularly to see how your body is handling carbs. Speak to your doctor before adding these fruits to your daily diet.

Honestly, if you have a busy schedule and can't monitor your sugar levels constantly, it is better to avoid these melons. They cause quick spikes which can make you feel tired or sluggish during work hours. Stick to apples or guavas which are much more stable and easy to pack.

I have insulin resistance due to PCOS, and both watermelon and cantaloupe tend to spike my blood sugar quite fast. I try to be very careful with melons. If you really want to eat them, keep the portion very small and never have them on an empty stomach.
