Is vaseline good to put on eczema?

My child has eczema, and their skin gets very dry and itchy. My mother-in-law said Vaseline helps, but I'm worried it might clog pores. Is Vaseline generally safe and effective for eczema, especially for kids?

I was researching this too! It seems like Vaseline is generally considered safe and good for moisturizing eczema, especially to lock in moisture after a bath. But it's not a treatment for the inflammation itself, just a barrier. Still, for dry patches, I guess it helps, right?

Always best to check with your doctor, especially for skin conditions. At a good hospital, they give very clear instructions. Vaseline can help create a barrier and moisturize, but for eczema, sometimes specific medicated creams are needed. Your doctor can tell you what's right for your skin.

Vaseline is a good emollient, meaning it helps to moisturize and protect the skin barrier, which is often compromised in eczema. It can certainly offer relief from dryness and itching. However, for active eczema flare-ups, specific topical steroids or calcineurin inhibitors prescribed by a dermatologist might be necessary. So, it's a good adjunctive, but not a standalone treatment for all stages.

Be very cautious. I know someone who used Vaseline for their eczema, and while it helped with dryness, sometimes it can trap heat or irritate if there's an infection. It's always safer to consult a dermatologist first. They can prescribe something that truly treats the eczema, not just moisturizes.

My dermatologist actually recommended Vaseline or other plain petroleum jelly for my eczema. She said it's great for creating a protective barrier and locking in moisture, which is super important for eczema-prone skin. It helps reduce water loss and can prevent flare-ups. But if it's very inflamed, she gave me other creams first.
