Is transgenderism a mental health issue?

My younger cousin recently told me she identifies as transgender, and it's all new for our family. Some relatives are saying it's a mental problem and she needs therapy for it. I just want to understand if this is actually considered a mental health issue or something different.

Hey, from what I understand, being transgender is about gender identity, not a mental illness. But sometimes, people might face mental health challenges like anxiety or depression because of discrimination or societal pressure. So support is key!

No, it's not a mental health issue itself. It's a natural variation of human experience. The struggle often comes from society not accepting or understanding, which then affects mental well-being. Focusing on acceptance and affirming care is what actually helps.

While being transgender itself isn't a mental illness, any distress related to gender identity is something a professional should help with. It's important to see a good therapist or doctor who understands these issues to get proper support and guidance, rather than self-diagnose or listen to rumors.

Not at all, it's not a mental health issue. It's just who someone is. The mental health part comes in when people face a lot of judgment or lack of support, which can be really hard. We need to be more understanding and inclusive, that's it.

Honestly, when I was struggling to understand my own identity, I felt so much distress, like it was a mental problem. But my therapist explained it's the disconnect between my assigned gender and my inner sense of self. The anxiety came from fighting it, not from the identity itself. It's about self-discovery.
