Is transgender a mental health diagnosis?

My friend recently came out as transgender, and some people around us are saying it's a mental illness. I want to understand if being transgender is actually considered a mental health diagnosis in the medical community. I want to be informed and supportive.

No, it's definitely not a mental health diagnosis. Being transgender simply means your gender identity is different from the sex you were assigned at birth. Sometimes, people might experience 'gender dysphoria,' which is the distress caused by this mismatch, and that can be addressed by mental health professionals, but being trans itself is just a part of who someone is.

Yaar, no, actually. Transgender hone ko mental illness nahi bolte. It's about someone's gender identity. Pehle log shayad sochte the, but now it's clear it's not a disorder. Sometimes if there's discomfort about their body and identity, that's called gender dysphoria, and for that, yes, people might seek therapy.

Oh, okay, so it's not a mental health diagnosis then. That makes sense. Is it something that people are born with, or does it develop over time? I'm trying to understand more.

No, being transgender is not a mental health diagnosis. It's about a person's inner sense of gender. If someone feels distress because their inner sense of gender doesn't match their body, that's called gender dysphoria. For such distress, just like for any other emotional challenge, practical support and therapy can be very helpful. It's about understanding and accepting oneself.
