Is thyroid disease an autoimmune disease?

My doctor mentioned that my thyroid problem is due to an 'autoimmune' reaction. So, is thyroid disease always considered an autoimmune disease, or are there different causes for it?

Yes, some common thyroid issues like Hashimoto's or Graves' are actually autoimmune. Your body's immune cells attack the thyroid. Regular exercise and a clean diet really help manage the inflammation alongside your prescribed medicines.

My sister has Hashimoto's and her doctor told us it's an autoimmune disorder where her immune system attacks her own thyroid gland. She takes her meds daily and she's completely active and fine now, no big deal.

Yes, apparently our immune systems get bored and decide to attack our own thyroid, which is called Hashimoto's, haha. It is very common, so don't worry, just get the right pills from your doctor.

Yes, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune thyroid condition, and it requires proper medical diagnosis.

I am new to this and a bit confused. Does autoimmune mean that the standard thyroid medicine won't work, or do we have to take different treatments for Hashimoto's?

Haan, Hashimoto's is a very common autoimmune disease. Along with your regular medical treatment, going for daily 30-minute walks and eating fresh foods can help manage the symptoms really well.

Some thyroid conditions are indeed autoimmune. I ignored my fatigue and joint pains for a long time thinking it was just weakness, but it turned out to be autoimmune thyroid. Please get tested early so you don't suffer needlessly like I did.
