Is there an over the counter cream for eczema?

My skin gets really dry and itchy sometimes, especially now with the weather changing, and my friend said it looks like eczema. Can I just get a cream from the chemist for this, or do I need to see a doctor first?

I completely understand how frustrating and stressful the constant itching from eczema can be, it really affects your sleep. You can easily find basic soothing creams like Aveeno Dermexa or Cetaphil OTC, but please get a doctor to check it if it becomes too red or painful.

My son has had eczema since he was two. We always keep a thick barrier cream like bioderma or basic white petrolatum jelly at home, which you can buy without a prescription. Just make sure to apply it immediately after a bath while the skin is still damp.

I just recovered from a terrible eczema flare-up on my hands. I used OTC moisturizers with ceramides like Cerave, which helped repair my skin barrier. But honestly, for the intense rash, the doctor had to prescribe a mild steroid cream, so do get it checked.

I tried so many home remedies like coconut oil and neem leaves, which help with mild dryness, but for real flare-ups, you need a good colloidal oatmeal cream. You can buy these over the counter. If the itching is severe, please don't scratch and consult a dermatologist.

For mild eczema, simple virgin coconut oil or plain aloe vera gel works gently to soothe the dry skin without any harsh chemicals. Along with this, practicing daily deep breathing helps reduce stress, which is a major trigger for skin flare-ups.
