Is there an autoimmune disease that affects the liver?

My brother's liver enzymes are elevated, and the doctors are looking into different possibilities. I was wondering, can autoimmune diseases also affect the liver? Is there a specific autoimmune disease that targets the liver?

Yes, there are a few conditions like Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH), Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). My gastroenterologist explained that in these conditions, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the liver cells or bile ducts, leading to chronic inflammation.

I have type 2 diabetes and my doctor always keeps a close eye on my liver function tests because fatty liver is common. He once mentioned that autoimmune liver diseases also exist and require very strict diet management and early medical intervention to prevent liver scarring.

Yes, Autoimmune Hepatitis is one such condition; getting a regular LFT blood test helps detect it early.

My cousin was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis almost fifteen years ago. At first we were very scared, but with proper daily medication and regular visits to a good hepatologist, she has been leading a completely normal and healthy life.

When my liver enzymes came back very high last year, I panicked and started googling autoimmune liver diseases, which scared me to death! It turned out to be just a temporary reaction to a medication. Don't stress yourself out reading online; just consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

I have been managing Primary Biliary Cholangitis for five years now. The key is catching it early through specific antibody tests like AMA and keeping up with your medication. Avoid self-medicating with random herbal supplements as they can put extra stress on an already inflamed liver.
