Is the highlighted vessel supplying or draining the kidney?

I'm a medical student, and I'm studying renal anatomy. Looking at a diagram right now, and there's a vessel highlighted near the kidney. I'm trying to figure out if it's bringing blood to the kidney or taking it away. Can someone explain?

Honestly, for body parts like this, it's best to look at a good anatomy book or ask a doctor directly. Internet diagrams can be confusing. If you're asking because of some pain or symptom, then please, don't delay seeing a proper doctor.

Oh, I get so confused with these diagrams! My first thought is always 'what if it's something serious?' But usually, the renal artery supplies blood to the kidney and the renal vein drains it. You'd need to check the context or labels on your specific diagram to be sure which one is highlighted.

It depends on whether it's the renal artery or renal vein. One brings blood in, the other takes it out. Check the labels on your image.

Hey! Don't stress too much over it, it's a common confusion. Usually, arteries supply and veins drain. So if it's red and coming *to* the kidney, it's likely supplying, and if it's blue and going *away* from it, it's draining. But yeah, confirm with the diagram's legend!
