Is substance abuse a mental health disorder?

I'm trying to understand more about mental health. My friend has been struggling with substance abuse, and I heard it's connected to mental health issues. Is substance abuse considered a mental health disorder itself, or a symptom of one?

I was actually reading up on this yesterday because of a college project. Yes, clinically it is classified as a mental health disorder because it changes how the brain functions. It's not just a matter of willpower, which was really eye-opening for me.

When we were dealing with a family crisis, the doctors at Max Hospital explained that substance use is a recognized medical condition affecting the brain. It is best to consult a qualified psychiatrist who can explain the medical and therapeutic options clearly.

As a mother who went through this with my child, I can tell you it is absolutely a mental health issue. We struggled for a long time thinking it was bad behavior, but things only improved when we got professional psychiatric help. Please don't hesitate to seek support.

Yes, it really is. It is so important that we stop judging people and realize they need real therapy and medical care. If you or someone you know is going through this, talking to a counselor can make a huge difference.

Indeed, it is a deep imbalance of the mind and body. The urge comes from deep psychological patterns. While medical treatment is absolutely necessary, incorporating gentle yoga and mindful breathing can greatly help in calming the mind during recovery.
