Is social media bad for teens mental health?

My daughter, who is 15, spends hours on her phone, especially on Instagram and Snapchat. I've noticed she gets really anxious or upset sometimes after being online. Is social media bad for teens' mental health?

Just like how high sugar affects our body silently, excessive screen time silently affects a teen's brain. It keeps them sedentary and anxious. Encouraging them to have fixed screen-free hours and healthy physical routines is very important.

In our family, we discuss how the constant comparison online affects young minds. It can lead to self-doubt and sleep issues. While encouraging outdoor play is good, if a teenager shows severe signs of withdrawal or sadness, seeking professional therapy is the right step.

Encouraging teenagers to pursue hobbies like gardening, painting, or yoga can naturally distract them from their phones. However, if you notice your child is showing signs of severe anxiety or depression, please do not delay in consulting a professional psychologist.

Yes, the constant loop of validation and cyberbullying is highly toxic for developing brains. Parents need to stop ignoring this and set firm boundaries on device usage. It is not about banning it, but teaching them digital hygiene.

Instead of arguing with kids daily, we made a simple rule: no phones at the dinner table and no devices in the bedroom after 10 PM. It took a few weeks, but their sleep and mood have visibly improved. Simple boundaries work better than constant scolding.
