Is sleep talking genetic?

My father used to talk in his sleep, and now my younger brother does it too. I'm curious if this tendency runs in families. Is sleep talking genetic, or is it purely environmental?

Honestly, it might be! My dad talks in his sleep and apparently, I do it too. My college roommates are always complaining that we both sound exactly the same during our midnight rants.

I don't know about genetics, but my mom and I both talk about food in our sleep! Last night she was apparently ordering paneer tikka in her sleep. It definitely runs in the family!

I can't say if it is scientifically genetic, but in my house, my father, my daughter, and I all talk in our sleep. For us, it just seems to be a common family trait that doesn't cause any harm.

If it is genetic, then my ancestors must have been a very talkative bunch! Don't worry about it, it is just a funny quirk you might have passed down to your kids.

There are some studies suggesting a genetic link to sleep talking. However, if it is causing sleep disruptions for you or your family, it is best to visit a sleep clinic and ask a doctor clearly.
