Is shivering a sign of fever?

My little one, she's been shivering a lot since morning and feels warm. My mother-in-law says it means fever is coming. Is that true, does shivering always mean a fever is starting?

Yeah, usually it is. Shivering is your body's way of trying to warm up when it feels cold, which happens when your temperature is rising during a fever. Always check with a thermometer, though.

Haan ji, bilkul! Aksar shivering hoti hai jab bukhar chadh raha hota hai. Body try karti hai khud ko garam rakhne ki. Lekin hamesha confirm karna chahiye thermometer se, na?

Oh, is it? I always thought it meant I was just cold. My mom used to say 'beta, kambal odh lo' but then also check my forehead. So it's like a pre-fever alert then?

Most of the time, yes. My wife always tells me to take a warm bath or cover up properly if I start shivering. And keep a thermometer handy, it's the simplest way to confirm if it's fever.
