Is rem the deepest sleep?

Someone told me that REM sleep is when your brain is most active, so it must be the deepest sleep, right? I'm trying to understand if REM is truly the deepest stage of sleep or if there's a difference.

No, it is a very common misconception, so don't worry. REM is actually a lighter stage of sleep where your brain is highly active and dreaming. The deepest sleep is the non-REM stage, which is when your body physically repairs itself.

Honestly, I don't get enough of either, but science says REM is not the deepest. REM is actually when you are busy dreaming about random things, so your brain is quite active. Deep sleep is the one where a loud alarm can't even wake you up.

No, REM sleep is actually lighter because that is when we dream. Deep sleep is the stage that helps restore your physical energy.

Clear cut answer—no, REM is not deep sleep. Deep sleep is what we call slow-wave sleep, which relaxes your muscles and body. REM is for dreaming and your brain. You need both, so just focus on getting peaceful, uninterrupted sleep.

They are different. I had severe sleep issues where I was lacking deep sleep entirely, which made my fatigue worse. If you are tracking your sleep and notice you are not getting enough deep sleep or REM, please consult a doctor for a proper evaluation.
