Is potassium bad for kidney disease?

My husband has chronic kidney disease, and his doctor has given us a long list of dietary restrictions. We're trying to manage his potassium intake very carefully. Is potassium generally considered bad for people with kidney disease, and if so, what should we avoid?

Honestly, at this age, half my time goes into checking which food has what element. Yes, potassium can be tricky for kidneys, but you cannot just stop eating everything. Better to ask your doc for a proper list, otherwise we will end up starving on just water.

When my son was diagnosed with renal issues, we had to be very careful with his diet. High potassium can put extra load on the kidneys if they aren't filtering properly. We work closely with a renal dietitian to plan his meals safely, and I suggest you do the same.

I can only share what happened with my father who has chronic kidney issues. His doctor strictly monitored his potassium levels and made us cut down on bananas and coconut water. It varies from person to person, so please check his blood reports first.

Please don't go by what people say on online forums or random health blogs about kidney diets. Kidney issues are very sensitive and self-managing potassium can be dangerous. Only a nephrologist can tell you your exact limit based on your lab reports.

According to my uncle's nephrologist, damaged kidneys struggle to filter excess potassium, which can lead to high levels in the blood, or hyperkalemia. He specifically advised us to limit high-potassium items like potatoes, spinach, and citrus fruits. It is highly recommended to get a serum potassium test done.

Keep your mind calm and don't let worry take over your health journey. It is true that we have to be careful with potassium-rich foods when kidneys are weak, but with the right guidance, everything falls into place. Take care and stay positive.

Hey, don't stress too much, we can figure this out. It actually depends on what stage of kidney disease it is. Just make sure to get a regular blood test done and share the potassium reports with your doctor so they can guide you safely.
