Is parathyroid the same as thyroid?

My friend was talking about her parathyroid glands, and I thought she meant her thyroid. Are parathyroid and thyroid glands the same thing, or are they different?

No, from my personal experience, they are definitely not the same. I had issues with my parathyroid, and it affected my calcium levels, not metabolism like my friend's thyroid problem. They are separate glands, but they are near each other in the neck.

Nope, they're not the same! 😄 The thyroid is like the big boss for metabolism, and the parathyroid glands (there are usually four tiny ones) are like mini-bosses for calcium levels. Both super important, but different jobs! ✨

No, they are different glands with different functions. Thyroid handles metabolism, parathyroid handles calcium. It's important to understand this because symptoms can sometimes feel similar but require totally different treatments. For any persistent symptoms, please see a doctor.

My endocrinologist explained it clearly: the thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland that controls metabolism, while the parathyroid glands (typically four small ones behind the thyroid) regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood. They are anatomically close but functionally distinct, producing different hormones and affecting different body systems. So, no, not the same.

Oh, many people get confused by this, don't worry. I remember my mother used to say they are like neighbours in the body but have different duties. Thyroid is for your body's energy, and parathyroid helps with your bones. Different, but both essential for good health.
