Is kidney stones a medical emergency?

My friend suddenly started having severe pain and had to be rushed to the hospital, and it turned out to be kidney stones. I'm wondering if kidney stones are always considered a medical emergency. When should one rush to the hospital?

Usually they aren't an emergency, but the pain sure makes you feel like you are about to meet your ancestors! However, if you start running a high fever, are vomiting constantly, or cannot pass urine at all, then it absolutely becomes an emergency. Otherwise, it is just a slow, painful test of patience.

Most small stones can be managed calmly with lots of water at home! But if you have unbearable pain or bleeding, please go to the hospital right away. Stay safe and keep smiling!

Do not listen to people online telling you to just drink beer or lemon juice during severe pain. A kidney stone blocking the urinary tract can cause severe damage and is an emergency if accompanied by high fever or inability to urinate. Get it verified by a doctor immediately.

Bhaiya, aam taur par toh emergency nahi hoti hai, pani pine se choti pathri nikal jati hai. Par agar peshab ruk jaye ya bahut tez bukhar chadh jaye, toh turant bade doctor ke paas bhagna chahiye, usme deri mat karna.

Having dealt with three kidney stones, I can tell you that a standard stone is not an emergency, though the pain is severe. But if you have a fever with chills, or blood in the urine, go straight to the ER. Otherwise, get an appointment with a urologist, get scanned, and plan the treatment calmly.
