Is kidney disease the same as kidney failure?

My relative was told she has kidney disease, and she's very scared that it means her kidneys are failing completely. She's confused about the terms. Is kidney disease the same as kidney failure, or is there a difference?

No, they are different stages. At the hospital where my dad goes, the doctors explained that kidney disease is when the function is slightly down, but failure is the last stage when they stop working completely. Ask your doctor to explain your reports clearly.

They are not the same, beta. I tried so many herbs in the early stages of my kidney disease, but eventually learned that only proper medical care and low-salt food keep it from turning into kidney failure. Be practical and follow the doctor.

Think of it as a spectrum. Kidney disease means there is some damage, but the kidneys can still do their job. Failure is the end-stage where dialysis or a transplant is needed because they can't filter anymore. Hope that clears it up!

I ignored my kidney disease symptoms for two years, and now I am close to kidney failure. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Get your regular checkups done before things get out of hand.

Not at all the same! Kidney disease is just a warning sign to take care of your health. With the right diet, you can easily prevent it from reaching the failure stage. Stay positive!

I was reading about this online. Kidney disease has 5 stages, and only stage 5 is actually called kidney failure. So most people with kidney disease are nowhere near actual failure.

Kidney disease is the overarching medical condition of impaired renal function, whereas kidney failure is the specific terminal stage of this disease. You should consult a nephrologist to understand where you stand medically.

My brain is too tired for heavy medical jargon, but basically, disease means the kidneys are struggling, and failure means they have completely quit their job. Don't wait till they quit, go check with a doc.

I totally get why you are asking, I had a massive panic attack when I saw 'kidney disease' on my report, thinking my organs were failing. But they are completely different stages, so take a deep breath.

Since I have high blood pressure, my doctor keeps checking my kidney function. He explained that managing my BP keeps my mild kidney disease from turning into failure. Lifestyle changes are everything here.
