Is it normal to have pain after a root canal?

Had a root canal two days back, and though the intense pain is gone, I still have a mild ache and swelling around the tooth. The dentist said it's post-procedure sensitivity. Is it normal to have pain after a root canal for a few days?

Yes, some pain and soreness around the gum is totally normal for a few days after a root canal. Your tooth has gone through a major procedure, so it needs time to heal.

A little bit of throbbing is absolutely normal after all that heavy drilling! Just have some cold ice cream and stick to soft khichdi for a couple of days, you will be totally fine. 😊

Haan na, starting mein to thoda pain hota hi hai because they clean the roots so deeply. Mere dental treatment ke baad bhi do-teen din tak ache ho raha tha. Just take your prescribed medicines on time and don't worry, it will settle down.

I literally panicked and called my dentist at midnight thinking my root canal had failed because the pain was so sharp. He calmly explained that the bone and tissue around the tooth take time to heal from the instrument pressure. True to his word, the pain vanished completely by the fifth day, so just hang in there.

I have had three root canals done, and there is always a dull ache when you try to bite for the first 4-5 days. The trick is to strictly avoid chewing anything hard on that side until the permanent cap is fitted. Also, lukewarm saline rinses three times a day work wonders for the gum swelling.

Please don't try putting clove oil or random home remedies on a tooth that just had a root canal, as it can irritate the treated area. Call your endodontist directly to confirm if the pain is normal or if there is an infection that needs proper antibiotics.

When I had my treatment done at a proper dental clinic, they clearly told me that post-op pain is expected due to tissue inflammation. They gave me a specific schedule for painkillers, so you should directly call your dentist and ask if you need a temporary prescription instead of guessing.
