Is it legal to sleep in your car in california?

My cousin is visiting California and he asked if it's okay to sleep in your car there. He's thinking of doing a lot of camping. Does anyone know if there are specific laws about sleeping in your car in California?

No matter where you are, please take care of your peace of mind and body. It is generally legal in California depending on the specific city's local laws, but try not to stress too much. Keep your intentions positive and rest well wherever you find shelter.

California has state-wide rules, but local city councils have their own parking laws, so it's a mix. Just remember that bad sleep in a cramped car destroys your recovery and muscle growth anyway. If you are training hard, find a proper flat bed to sleep so your body can heal.

Be very careful about advice you get online, especially regarding international laws. What works in one city in California might get you fined in another. Check the official California DMV or local city police websites directly instead of relying on random forum posts.

I was actually researching this for a road trip itinerary recently! From what I read, California state allows resting at rest stops for up to 8 hours, but cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco have very strict local bans on sleeping in vehicles on residential streets.

I don't know about US laws, but please don't compromise on your health by sleeping in cars. I ignored my body's warning signs and sleeping issues for months, thinking I could just push through, and ended up in the ICU with severe exhaustion. Get yourself checked if you're feeling chronically fatigued.

Listen to me, if you are in California and have no choice but to sleep in your car, look for designated 'Safe Parking Programs' run by charities. They provide safe, legal lots with security. Don't park in dark, isolated alleys; your personal safety is what matters most.

I spent a few weeks traveling through California and had to sleep in my SUV a couple of times. Walmart parking lots used to be safe, but many now ban overnight stays. Your best bet is to look up 24-hour gym parking lots or state rest areas, and always cover your windows for privacy.
