Is it dangerous to have only one kidney?

A relative of mine was born with only one kidney and he seems to live a normal life. But I always wondered, is it dangerous to have only one kidney? Does it cause problems later?

Honestly, it is not dangerous if your remaining kidney is fully healthy. My doctor explained that a single kidney can actually grow slightly larger to do the work of two quite easily. You just need to monitor your blood pressure and get basic kidney function tests done once a year to be absolutely sure.

It is totally possible to live a long, completely normal life with just one kidney. However, we should be careful about protecting that one kidney from physical injury, especially during contact sports. Always consult your doctor before starting any heavy protein supplements or new medications though.

I was just reading about this the other day because a cousin of mine was born with only one kidney. Apparently, many people don't even find out they have only one till they get an ultrasound for something else! It is actually quite amazing how well the body adapts.

I have been living with a single kidney for over twenty-five years now, beta. There is nothing to worry about as long as you keep your salt intake in check and drink enough water daily. Trust me, I still go for my morning walks and feel completely fine.

Look, don't stress yourself out needlessly. Ek kidney pe log aaram se puri zindagi nikaal lete hain without any issues. Bas thoda junk food kam karo, drink plenty of water, and stay away from unnecessary painkillers as they put extra pressure on the kidney.

Even if everyone says it is fine, you should definitely keep checking in with a nephrologist regularly. Even a small infection or high blood pressure can cause issues if not caught early. Please get regular blood and urine tests done just to stay on the safer side.

Since you have only one kidney, you should be a bit mindful of your diet. Try to avoid high-sodium foods, and don't go overboard with heavy protein-rich diets or too many lentils at once. Simple home-cooked vegetarian meals with lots of green veggies are best to keep it functioning smoothly.
